Now in this blog I can talk for pages upon pages about how it influenced all games after it. I could go into specifics about how without this game we wouldn’t have the Fallout series, the Elder Scrolls, or even Halo. But instead I will talk about what made these games special. And mostly why they are still so special to a guy like me.
Why was this game special? Look it up in its original graphics. It was the first game I can remember for PC that tried to not only blend its limited graphics with a in depth story (for its time) but the first time I remember being able to use the arrow keys to move my character and not needing to type “Go North” to move forward. Talk about revolutionary? To me back then it was just what the story portrays pure magic.
How was this game special you may be asking yourself? Well remember as a kid (and as an adult) looking forward for a sequel to a show or movie but just being completely disappointed and regretting every life choice? Well this was one of the times I was not disappointed. I got a game whose story may have been less in depth but the imagery I encountered surpassed my expectations. And with rumors of a third one coming out I was at the heights of anticipation.
How was it special? Did you read the last paragraph? How many games can start a franchise then the 3rd game in just throw a brand new main character at you! Now only was Kings Quest 3 able to do that but then they dared to intertwine it with the original 2 games. We got taken for a whirlwind of a story when we find out all about Gwydion and how he does link up with our feather capped king.
What made this game special to me? Even after only getting to play it after Kings Quest 5 was I was playing as a female. Now to most people that wouldn’t seem nearly as impressive but when this game happened it was always saving the damsel, very rarely would you see it from the other perspective. Not to mention her going to save our regular hero made it extra special. Have to love a tight time line right?
What made this game special? Look at the leap in technology between Kings Quest 4 and then look at Kings Quest 5. Not only did everything look “alive” in the sense that we saw movement constantly but it brought use voice acting (in the CD Rom version). And while even now I have an immense hatred for owls wearing vests and glasses to hear my hero talk for the first time can still give me shivers.
What made this game not only special but a piece of artwork? It took all the lessons learned from Kings Quest 5 and just upped the ante. Now we had full artwork but it looked more amazing, not only did we have voice acting but it was done well. Add in the emotional aspect and I am not ashamed to admit it was a giant tear jerker. This is a game many consider to be Sierra Online’s at their best. It would be hard to disagree.
What made this game special? Besides the huge jump in graphics, voice acting, and being a CD exclusive? Well while many hate this game I find it to have a certain charm myself. Remember the Disney films that while they entertained you they just couldn’t stack up to the big boys while still holding that special place in your heart? To me that’s Kings Quest 7. Not to mention we had Sierra attempt to do musical numbers. That alone is worth the price of the game.
And then we had nothing. Kings Quest 8 was released in 1998. After that the entire franchise seemed to just drop. We would hear about rumors of a Kings Quest 9 but none of them every came out. And recently great fan efforts have come out including the previously mentioned AGD games and even an unofficial Kings Quest 9 (also linked below). It showed a lot of fans are still craving this series to continue.
Now it is all in the hands of phoenix of company named Sierra Online and the developers The Odd Gentlemen . All I can really do is hope they treat this franchise with the justice and love it deserves. I can also hope they can bring back the love for Kings Quest in all of us. Make the fans remember why they fell in love with it. To continue the story of the Royal Family and maybe let King Graham have a few more adventure. Make us older fans proud Sierra, make us proud The Odd Gentlemen. You are resurrecting a franchise that has been damaged, broken and now hopefully will be able to keep its place in history. I am sure King Graham has his adventurers cap ready to go. I know I do now.
